Learning How to Be Yourself and Finding True Happiness Within

3/1/2024

Being true to yourself is a journey that many people embark on, yet few truly master.

In a world that often pressures us to conform and fit into societal norms, it can be challenging to stay true to our authentic selves and feel at peace with who we really are.

However, learning to be true to yourself is essential for finding true happiness within.

It’s taken me long time to realise that it seems the only way to feel true happiness, is not to seek a life free from problems, but to embrace everything life has to offer and just let it be.

It is unrealistic to expect that things will cease to exist, and often it’s the challenging things that make us unique and help guide us in becoming stronger and wiser.

Authenticity according to the dictionary is “to be genuine or real”.

Being authentic, is the only thing we have power over and what gives us true meaning to life.

Staying true to ourselves is the only thing we can actively do to guide us and bring peace into our lives. Accepting who we are and surrendering to what will ultimately be.

We need to start using our intuition to trust ourselves, awakening our spirits, and allowing ourselves to re-connect to ourselves. Living a life free of judgement and caring what other people really think.

I believe when we are at peace with ourselves, we let go of expectations, our ego and a perceived perception of who we think should be.

There are ways which we can all achieve these, authentically.

Self Awareness

One of the first steps in being true to yourself is self-awareness. Take the time to reflect on your values, beliefs, and passions.

What makes you unique? What brings you the most amount of joy? What motivates you?

Embracing your individuality means accepting and celebrating your quirks, strengths, and weaknesses. Be honest with yourself.

Remember, no one is perfect, and it's our imperfections that make us human.

Embracing your individuality allows you to live authentically and attract people and experiences that align with your true self.

Set boundaries

Another crucial aspect of being true to yourself is setting boundaries.

Boundaries are essential for protecting your mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

By setting boundaries, you create space for the things that truly matter to you and cultivate a sense of self-respect.

Ask yourself, are you making choices based on what you really want and need or are you making choices based on what you think you should do based on someone else’s expectations or demands?

Learn to say no to things that don't align with your values or drain your energy, but most of us do this without thinking by default. It’s all too easy to make the obvious choice, to avoid making a difficult decision and sometimes dealing with confrontation.

As women, we are programmed to be a good girl, be helpful, and to do the right thing.

But before you put off a burning desire to change something, ask yourself is this what I really want? Is this the best thing for me?

If not, maybe it’s not the right thing to do after all, and that’s OK!

Be healthy

All too often it’s so easy to make unhealthy choices in the moment to make ourselves feel better. Have a glass of wine to relax or eat something sweet because it gives a temporary feeling of escapism and satisfaction.

We all know we can make better and healthier choices, so why not think twice before you reach for the bottle or biscuit. Ask yourself, do I really need this?!

Chances are we don’t. So instead, identify the uncomfortable feeling we’re trying to escape, sit with it and the feeling will pass. Maybe even use it as motivation to act and do something about it!

We all feel guilty when we make bad choices, so stop it!

Do something for you!

Practicing self-care is crucial for staying true to yourself.

Self-care involves taking care of your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Prioritise activities that bring you joy, help you relax, and recharge. Whether it's taking a walk in nature, practicing meditation, or indulging in a hobby, self-care is a powerful tool for nurturing your true self.

We all have that one thing that can makes us feel good about ourselves, find out what and what it means for you and how to make it happen.

It could be getting creative, helping a friend, or cooking a lovely meal…

Give yourself permission to do something that will make you feel good, and for only you, you won’t regret it!

Connect

As you navigate the path of being true to yourself, it's important to surround yourself with supportive and like-minded individuals.

Seek out relationships and communities that encourage and uplift you. Surrounding yourself with positive influences can help reinforce your commitment to being true to yourself.

When we’re feeling down, tired or stressed, the easiest thing to do is to want to avoid people and put off being sociable.

Try connecting, reaching out and talking to a friend or a family member, open up and share what’s on your mind. Most of the time your problem doesn’t seem half as bad, and a sympathetic ear and a kind smile, is sometimes all you need.

Learning how to be true to yourself and finding true happiness within is a transformative journey. Start embracing your individuality, setting boundaries, surrounding yourself with supportive individuals, and practicing self-care.

Being true to yourself is an ongoing process. It requires self-reflection, self-acceptance, and continuous growth.

Embrace the journey and be patient with yourself. True happiness comes from living a life that aligns with your values, passions, and purpose.

By staying true to yourself, you can live a life that is authentic, fulfilling, and aligned with your true essence.

We can be free. We can be truly happy.

Live organically.
